Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 finally add limited dust resistance

Another leak of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 has revealed the full specs and features of the upcoming foldables, including the long-awaited arrival of dust resistance.

To date, Samsung’s foldable phones have never offered real, measurable dust resistance. The Galaxy Z Flip and Fold 2 introduced brushes on the hinge to keep dirt out, but it doesn’t always work. Then the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 introduced water resistance.

According to marketing images leaked by Evan Blass (@evleaks) via a Substack newsletter, Samsung is finally improving that this year.

Apparently, both the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 feature IP48 water and dust resistance. That means water resistance (the second number) is unchanged, but dust resistance is available for the first time. A rating of four on the IP rating scale means the device is protected against debris larger than 1mm (0.039 inches) in size. That still leaves quite a bit of room for dust to seep in, and frankly, it probably won’t. that Much stronger than previous generations, but ultimately a step forward.

Beyond that, the marketing images confirm virtually all of the specs and features of Samsung’s upcoming foldable devices.

Starting with the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung is highlighting the lighter weight, which measures in at 239g. That’s down from the Fold 5’s 253g. The interior display, Samsung says, is 1.5x brighter at 2,600 nits. The cameras are unchanged, but Samsung is talking up improvements made by AI. The materials also highlight some improvements to battery life thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 inside. Battery capacity hasn’t increased. The hardware itself uses aluminum instead of titanium, and the exterior display uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 instead of Armor. That means the two big upgrades from the Galaxy S24 Ultra won’t be coming to the Fold, despite the rumored price increase.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 features some notable upgrades. It’s still made of aluminum, too, but it has a 50MP camera, as mentioned in a leak earlier today. It also features a vapor chamber — a first for the Flip series — for better cooling. The battery is also larger, at 4,000mAh, up from 3,700mAh on the previous model. Despite that, the device is actually 0.2mm thinner than the Flip 5 when closed.
